- Around one hundred people live at St. Patrick’s Missionary Society in Kilteegan, Co. Wicklow. These include a priest, the on-site staff and the residents of a nursing home. The society consists of several buildings on several acres of heavily wooded land. When the question arose as to how they could sustainably heat the collection of buildings dating from the early 1800’s, CDGA had the answer. The society had been using oil for heating, something they wished to move away from due to the cost and, more importantly, it’s negative environmental impact. Accordingly, CDGA proceeded to study the amount of heat required, the peak times and if the woodlands on the site could supply the necessary fuel. The conclusion we reached was that a wood chip burner could be used to heat the buildings and that wood chip gathered in the woodlands could be used as fuel in a sustainable fashion, allowing the society to become increasingly self-sufficient...
