A few years ago, we began working for a CIO on upgrading some off-grid automated precision measuring stations. The first part of the work was designing and subsequently either upgrading or building power systems that relied on a combination of photovoltaic cells and diesel generators. In some cases, the stations were on the local power grid but the grids themselves were quite unreliable and prone to surges and drop-offs in power. We upgraded these power systems to have as steady a source of electricity as possible flowing into the stations. All of this work was accompanied by technical studies in order to help optimise the stations in the future and to help make the best of their adverse surroundings.
